When was the first time you had to defend your gayness?
“I’ve been very fortunate in my life when it comes to my family as for as acceptance goes. My struggle came from my friends and classmates. I all of the sudden went from being “Hannah the star athlete” to being,” “Hannah the lesbian.” I fought through that, showed them I was the same person, just liked the same sex and ended up becoming the first Lesbian prom queen of my high school. (Hahaha)”
What advice do you want to give younger kids coming out?
“My advice to the younger kids coming out is, just do it! Life is too short to be anything but yourself. Your family will accept it in time, your friends will love you through it and there is no greater feeling than being free from secrets.”
Why do you think it’s important to show the world who we are as a community?
“I think it’s important because we are the same as everyone else. We are intelligent, we are strong, we are willing to fight for our rights, we are a family, we are PEOPLE and all people deserve to be equal.”
What if your hope for the gay kids of the future?
“I hope that kids in the future feel more accepted. I hope they don’t have to see people give seconds looks while they’re are walking down the street holding their partners hand. I hope they are full of pride, hope and they never have their rights questioned or taken away.”
